The People’s Park
wind quintet | 25’
The People’s Park narrates the history of New York City’s beloved Washington Square Park. The piece chronicles the park’s evolution from the marshy Native American village of Sapokanikan (“Tobacco Field”) into the iconic landmark of downtown New York City and vibrant home for artists and intellectuals it is today. The piece is in five major movements, each marking an important moment in the history of Washington Square Park, with a prelude and two interludes which evoke the passage of time between movements. The music reflects the styles popular during each period, guiding the listener through the rich musical history of downtown New York City, where the park finds its home. The People's Park was commissioned by Washington Square Winds in celebration of their fifth anniversary.
